Genre Research: Get Out
This movie starts out as a white woman introducing her black boyfriend and their interracial relationship to her parents. Events occur which lead the boyfriend to suspect the unexpected. He ends up finding himself in unfamiliar territory with people who mean him no good. Several elements in this movie stuck out to me. One in particular was the element of surprise. When the boyfriend ( Chris) sensed that something was up, surprise after sulfide occurred which eventually lead him to his answer. The element of humanity was also at stake in this movie. The cult that Chris discovered had dangerous plans that could’ve effected all of humanity. Their ideologies like taking the brains of humans and using it for evil scientific advance risked humanity. This had a huge effect on the viewers by making the feel that their life was also impacted based on what happened in the end. I think the risk to humanity is a smart element and I hope to used it in my project. The element of graphic violence was also apparent in the movie. Bloody brains and other stomach turning sights incite visual terror in viewers. While I personally am not the biggest fan of blood I know it has a major impact on imagination. Graphic violence is a must in any horror film to visually illustrate the writers intentions. Therefore, some graphic violence will be shown in my project. This horror movie also had a bit of humor in it. Their were scenes when Chris’s cousin came in and made light of the dire situation. I thought this was an odd element to add to a horror movie but it was well received. I personally will try and wiggle in a bit of humor if I can in my project. Overall, Get Out was a head turner and gave me lots of ideas for my project.
