Genre Research: Bird Box

The movie starts off as a town of people come under attack by a predator that if seen will kill on instant. The line survivors of this attack must find safety while blindfolded. This causes Jessica and her children to embark on a dangerous journey to safety while the danger is around them. This movie was my favorite because of two key elements. The first one being the element of surprise. This whole movie is about the unseen enemy for those who are alive. Meaning that while blindfolded anything and everything could happen. This element made the movie scary because every second they were up against something they couldn’t even see. The second element was the risk to humanity. The survivors witnessed family, friends and their while lives fall victim to this unseen enemy. Their lives had changed forever in the span of minutes. It eerily was apparent that their lives could end as well. This had a huge effect on the viewers by making the feel that their life was also impacted based on what happened in the end. Lastly, the element of graphic violence. Graphic violence is a must in any horror film to visually illiterate the writers intentions. This enemy turned people into uncontrollable waste. This left and impact on me as the viewer so I will be sure to add this into my project. An element that I notice in the movie that I won’t be using in my project was the serene setting. Most of the movie took place in a beautifully natured forest and it had a light and airy tone. The initial setting was a direct contrast to the intent of the film. I will be sure to keep my setting a line with my genre.
